After three months of great passion and effort, Lagarde wrapped the 2021 harvest and the results obtained on our farms are very positive. Despite being a new season affected by the pandemic caused by Covid-19, the protocols implemented by the company with the winery and vineyard staff allowed the tasks to be carried out normally. As for the technical part, the health of the harvested grapes stands out, which promise great white wines and excellent reds.

Lagarde, a Mendoza winery founded in 1897, performs its harvest manually, along six family farms, located in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. This year, the harvesting of the fruits began in the first days of February, in the high mountain vineyards, and ended a few weeks ago, in early May.

“Evaluating our wines so far, we can define the 2021 vintage as excellent. It was a wetter and markedly cooler season than others, especially during the months of January and February. Despite the rains, we were able to harvest with almost impeccable health”, explained Juan Roby, the winery's Oenology Manager.

Regarding the white wines that he is already making, Roby indicated: “They come very well, with fine and elegant aromas, a moderate alcohol and a very fresh mouth”. Some examples are Viognier, from Perdriel (Luján de Cuyo), Sauvignon Blanc, from Vista Flores (Tunuyán), and Chardonnay from the upper area of Gualtallary (Tupungato).

As for the reds, they stand out for their excellent color and aromatic intensity. "They are balanced, have a very good structure, good concentration, freshness and acidity," revealed Roby, who has led Lagarde's oenological team since 2000.

In particular, regarding Argentina's emblem strain, Roby added: “I feel that Malbec stands out in all areas: in Luján de Cuyo, specifically in Drummond, Perdriel and Agrelo, it comes with good colors, ripe and unctuous tannins. In the Uco Valley, speaking of the Gualtallary area, it has a high concentration of color and aromas, as well as firmer and more marked tannins ”.

To close, Roby added that some Cabernet Francs will also attract attention in this vintage, as they are proving to be wines with “a lot of typicality, fresh and vibrant”.
