Allwinestories presents in Greek Wine Day2025 , Venetsanos Winery and awaits Italian wine lovers for a unique wine experience, November 1st at Hotel Albani Firenze

Venetsanos winery is located right above the port of Athinios, overlooking the magnificent caldera of Santorini. The Venetsanos family has a very long tradition of producing wine. Originally was produced for the island and subsequently, it was exported extensively, and particularly to countries such as Russia. It was built in 1947 by the Venetsanos family and became the first industrial winery on the island. Its most distinguishing feature is the structural design, which essentially used gravity, facilitating energy efficiency, at a time when access to electricity and other energy sources was very limited. The winery was built in an unconventional manner constructed from above and moving downwards.

Santorini is unique by itself. The soil which is made from the last volcanic eruption has a unique composition of rust, cinders, lava, and pumice stone. Even in soil like this - poor for the m

ajority of plants - the wine grows normally. The regional Santorini micro-climate gives lower temperatures compared with the other islands, rare rainfall during the wintertime, and strong winds all year long, influences the way of development and cultivation of the vine. Despite the dry climate of Santorini, night developing humidity is captured by the soil and absorbed by the plants.

Santorini Vineyard

The vineyard of Santorini is one of the oldest in Greece with a lot of unknown varieties. The vines are not grafted on American rootstock, because phylloxera has never attacked the island.

The Beginning

Venetsanos Winery used to be a vine grower from the beginning. They knew about the local viticulture and realized high-quality wines start their journey from the land. Venetsanos family did an investment, started planting new vineyards, stay focused on the unique local cultivation methods such as basket pruning, protect and provide the soil for the vine needs, use sulfur in the dust as a shield to serious grape diseases.

Today

Today Venetsanos Winery manages 15 hectares of vineyards mostly with Assyrtiko variety. Athiri, Aidani, Platani, Mavrotragano, and Mandilaria, complete the puzzle of the other local grape indigenous varieties which are giving the space for research and development.
