From authors Darren Star ("Sex and the City" and "Emily in Paris") and David Schulner ("New Amsterdam") tells the story of a winemaker.
If the bond between wine and cinema is a timeless one (recently also starring in the Oscars, but also in new Italian films), capable of combining stories and landscape, emotions and iconic moments, making known, as a result, to the general public also the beauty of the territories and their excellence, including food and wine, this feeling is increasingly the protagonist even in the most successful TV series (if you only think of international productions such as "White Lotus" or Italian productions such as "The Leopard", both set in Sicily, without forgetting "Drops of God" on Apple TV+). The latest chapter of this "saga" comes from the United States and, precisely, from the heart of the country's most famous wine region, a territory that, since the nineties of the twentieth century, has embodied the birth of global wine tourism, thanks also to wines that have become "cult" among enthusiasts. We are talking about Napa Valley, the natural set for the filming of "Uncorked", the new dramedy series announced by Netflix that tells the professional and personal rebirth of a wine producer.
The choice of Californian vineyards as a set, explains the Napa Valley Vintners (NVV), the association representing local producers, comes at a crucial time for the region, committed to relaunching after a period of production contraction and market crisis, also evidenced by the more than 15,000 hectares of vineyards uprooted in California between 2024 and 2025 (as we reported on WineNews). Napa Valley has, after all, a long liaison with cinema made up of successful precedents, certified by many "wine" titles loved by the public: just think of true cults, such as "Mondovino", from 2004, directed by Jonathan Nossiter to tell the impact of globalization on wine-producing regions, "Sideways", also from 2004, winner of an Academy Award, which tells the story of the friendship of two men on a road trip, or "Bottle shock", from 2008, which narrates the region's entry into international wine success, but also the more recent "Wine Country", from 2019, where the protagonists of the Californian journey are, on the other hand, six women.
In this context, the collaboration with Netflix and with international producers such as Darren Star, author of "Sex and the City" and "Emily in Paris", and David Schulner, creator of "New Amsterdam", can become a global showcase to turn the spotlight back on the territory. " We immerse ourselves in the heritage and romance of Napa Valley, where each great vintage has a unique story," said Star, with the two authors having spent the last year in close contact with the local community, visiting wineries, meeting producers and participating in the area's iconic events - from Auction Napa Valley to Premiere Napa Valley to meeting the Napa Valley Vintners - to restore the complexity and charm of a region that, Although affected by recent difficulties (as, moreover, many other important wine terroirs), it remains a beacon of world wine.
