Skiouros Winery — Inspired by Nature, Driven by Passion in Greek Wine Day

Skiouros Winery, located in Thessaloniki, cultivates vineyards in Amphipolis, Serres, and works closely with carefully selected growers. A small, family-run estate, Skiouros stands out for its meticulous care and heartfelt passion in every stage of the winemaking process. The creative mission of our winemakers is to discover and lovingly share the subtle secrets hidden within every magical drop of the grape.

A small squirrel inspired the name, set the course, and continues to accompany the winemaking adventures of Skiouros Winery, a small winery based in Thessaloniki with vineyards in Amphipolis, Serres. With playful labels and a special focus on the animal world, the winery has transformed the owner Theodoros Nathanailidis’ winemaking hobby into a thriving enterprise.

Vineyards and Production:
Skiouros Winery owns 22 hectares of vineyards in Amphipolis, cultivating varieties such as Assyrtiko, Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mavrotragano. It also sources grapes from 35 hectares of local growers for Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. The annual production reaches 25,000 bottles, featuring eight labels — six single-varietal wines and two blends.

Design and Expansion:
Some bottles feature a matte finish, and the label names — such as White Elephant, Red Squirrel, and Long Necks of Birds — draw inspiration from nature. The winery currently exports to Cyprus, Germany, and Austria, and plans to relocate to a larger, visitable facility in Amphipolis, aiming to increase production to 100,000 bottles within five years. New plantings across an additional 35 hectares are also in progress.

Personal Story:
The squirrel was a beloved animal of Nathanailidis during his childhood. After losing a squirrel-shaped toy at the zoo, he decided to pay tribute to his old friend through the winery’s name. In 2016, following a fungal attack on the vineyards, a squirrel appeared — a sign of hope and perseverance.
