On the occasion of the first auction of Greek wines organized by Vergos Auctions on December 14, 2025, at the Papagiannakos Estate, a landmark event for the promotion of Greek wine in the international auction scene, a meaningful dialogue is opening up around the dynamics, value, and future of high-quality Greek labels. In the following interview, we talk to the man behind this important initiative, Mr. Andreas Vergos, Managing Director της VERGOS Auction of Vergos Auctions.

Andreas Vergos
What prompted you to hold the first auction dedicated exclusively to Greek wines?
The idea for the Greek wine auction was born a few years ago, in 2021, following a charity auction held in close collaboration with the Domaine Skouras to mark the anniversary of the estate's wine, Labyrinth 21. The auction was a complete success, with all proceeds going to support the goals of the Spastic Protection Society / Open Door. In the period that followed, the idea matured and the wine market evolved even further. With the valuable assistance of people with deep experience in the wine industry, we assessed the potential of the venture and the future prospects it offered, approaching this first auction based on the long experience that the House has in the field of auctions. With the results achieved, we now recognize a promising start for Greek wine in the secondary market.
What criteria were used to select the wines that participated in the auction?
The selection of wines was based on many factors: quality, age, rarity, and origin. Bottles aged 10 years and older, with a clear identity and recognized wine history, large bottles, and bottles from rare vintages, all straight from the winemakers' cellars. In other words, labels that are not easily available on the market. Our goal was to create an interesting catalog with important entries that would attract interest without overwhelming buyers with an excessive number of entries. We will certainly include many more iconic labels from the Greek wine scene in our upcoming auctions. In the future, we would like the catalog to reflect the evolution of Greek wine with entries from all geographical regions of Greece and the great wineries that our country has to offer.

Can Greek wine become an investment asset?
The answer is definitely yes. Greek wines have all the characteristics required to become an investment asset, they are among the best in the world, and winemakers invest systematically and consistently in their aging. This first auction was the first step in the right direction for the domestic wine market.
How do you see the potential of Greek wine in international auctions in the coming years?
Very promising and constantly on the rise! The participation of Greek wines in international auctions raises the level of healthy competition and, at the same time, contributes to highlighting the uniqueness of Greek wines by placing them in the international category of fine and collectible wines.

What were your impressions of the audience that attended the auction either in person or online?
The winemakers, collectors, industry professionals, and wine lovers who participated in the auction, either in person or online, all shared the same enthusiasm for the first wine auction. The positive messages and comments we received give us the necessary impetus and optimism for the future of this type of auction, which we would like to become a permanent reference point for all those who love Greek wine.

How do you plan to enrich the next auction, and what message would you like to send to Greek winemakers regarding their participation in future auctions?
First of all, I would like to warmly thank all the wine producers who enthusiastically embraced this first auction. They opened their cellars and even parted with bottles from their personal collections, contributing significantly to the success of the auction. I believe that after this very dynamic start, the catalog for the next auction will be truly impressive and representative of the exceptional domestic wine production.
