Two years ago, the organisers of the Oenorama wine fair had to cancel it just a week before it was due to be held because of the pandemic. This year, however, Oenorama returned with an unexpected dynamism that caused waves of optimism among participating exhibitors and visitors.
"We needed it," was the motto on everyone's lips as they tasted wines and exchanged opinions as if at a family reunion after many years of absence. "It was the wine tastiness that defined the atmosphere at Oenorama this year, where for three days, thanks to the gifts of Dionysus, both pandemics and wars were forgotten," said exhibition organiser Dinos Stergidis.
The last time most of the winemakers of the exhibition happened to present their wines in Athens was in 2019, so the 6,000 visitors this year are clearly ...thirsty to taste their favorite wines from the "lost" due to Covid vintages of 2019 and 2020, but also to discover new loves among the 400 and more new releases of the exhibition.
Since 1994, when it was organized for the 1st time at the Olympic Stadium, Oenorama has evolved into an undisputed institution for Greek wine with visitors from all over Greece and abroad. This year, once again, hundreds of producers, importers and distributors from all over the country sampled more than 2,300 Greek and foreign wines and spirits to consumers and wine professionals.
The dynamism of Greek wine is not only a matter of image but also of numbers: in the last ten years our exports have increased by 35%, with an annual value of more than €70 million. Especially in third countries, the last decade (2009-2019) has seen a significant increase of 130% in volume and 70% in value. These trends are indicative of a healthy and extroverted sector that plans, invests and implements without any particular requirements from the state, with a view to constantly improving the quality offered.
Just like Oenorama, which has been serving Greek wine for the last 28 years.
