he annual Wine2Wine event saw top management of Veronafiere and Wine Spectator meet to reveal the names of the 130 companies listed in the coveted Operawine selection which for many years by now has previewed every new edition of Vinitaly. The finest Italian wines in a dialogue with international markets and all their nuances - and especially North America: red, white and rosé wines - as well as iconic bubbles. An authentic Italian Wine Dream where Italian wines become an undisputed passion for Americans.
Tuscany leads the field with 35 wine cellars selected, followed by 19 each from Piedmont and Veneto, plus 10 wine cellars from Sicily and 8 from Campania.
The following figures detailing macro-areas give a clearer picture of the scope of this prestigious tasting: 57 from the north, 44 from central Italy and 29% from the South.
Ten new entries compared to the 2022 selection confirm just how far Wine Spectator is able to influence the wine lifestyle choices of consumers in the reference markets. The United States is historically the main outlet market for Italian wine exports, worth about 2.3 billion euros in 2021, representing almost 1/3 of US imports.
The strength of the dollar meant that US demand suffered less than other higher costs caused by inflation: the UIV/Vinitaly Observatory suggests that imports of Italian sparkling wines remain positive (+6% in volume and +8% in value) while demand for Italian still wines suffered a setback (-7.2% in volume and -1.3% in value).
Keep up to date or, rather, stay tuned, to find out which wines will interpret Italian excellence on 1 April in Verona.
