86 candidates, citizens of 20 different countries, participated in the most recent ASI Diploma examination. The ASI Diploma represents the pinnacle of sommellerie. The sommeliers who recently attempted the Diploma examination had to complete an advanced level test and were asked to perform complicated service skills. 62 candidates passed the examination of which only 27 earned the prestigious title of ASI Gold Diploma. 25 received the ASI Silver Diploma and 10 the ASI Bronze Diploma. Just over 400 sommeliers worldwide have now achieved this designation making it one of the most exclusive titles amongst the global sommelier community. Of the rising notoriety of the ASI Diploma, ASI President William Wouters says “credit must be given to the hard work of our Exam Committee, led by Director Giuseppe Vaccarini and supported by Michèle Chantôme, Alberto Merico, Leo D’Addazio, Andreas Matthidis, Edwin Raben, Jean-Vincent Ridon and Saiko Tamura-Soga. Without their tireless efforts, and commitment, the Diploma would not have either the prestige and worldwide recognition it boasts today.”
Created in 2012, the ASI Diploma was designed to develop professional sommeliers’ capabilities corresponding to the ASI by-laws, which involve a wide range of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Offered in French, English or Spanish, the yearly uniform exams, administered on the same day by participating national associations (17 held exams in 2022), include written tests, blind tastings, essays, service tests and oral presentations.
